Gamify your team’s goal-getting with Momentum Bingo

Gamify your team’s goal-getting with Momentum Bingo
December 29, 2025 Beth Terpening

Surrounded by my grown children last week, I got up to speed on techniques young adults are using to reach for their dreams.

Vision boards have evolved to game boards.

Decades ago, I hand-cut magazine pages and glued wonky shapes to construction paper, then taped the resulting collage to my bedroom mirror—a visible reminder of what I wanted to do, have, and be.

Now, there are apps for that. Digital collages make it easy to assemble images that represent ideal jobs, dream vacations, shrinking debt, growing savings, and other achievements of the “future self.” Simply save the resulting jpg as your phone’s wallpaper, and your vision becomes supremely portable, always in view.

And that’s not all. Some clever soul gamified this goalsetting technique by creating Vision Board Bingo: a tidy grid of big and small goals you set for the year (or some other meaningful stretch of time). Each time you hit a goal, you mark the square. Mark all the squares in a row and … BINGO! You choose how to celebrate.

The whole concept struck me as an approachable, effective, and—dare I say it—fun way to set goals and recognize wins.

Name what you want, keep the plan in sight, and note progress often.

What if your team could do that?

Yeah, your team of people (maybe even you) who detest annual planning and performance reviews. The ones who are demoralized by the corporate complexity and bureaucratic B.S. baked into so many performance management systems.

Listen up, team leaders and business owners:

Goalsetting does not have to suck.

You can do better. When you reconnect with your team next week, surprise them with Momentum Bingo.

(Note to no-nonsense readers: If the word bingo makes you twitch, keep reading for an alternative term that’s less playful but still positive.)

What is Momentum Bingo?

Momentum Bingo is a simple goal-setting tool that turns priorities into a shared, visual game board. Instead of a long list of goals and vague expectations, you and your team co-author a grid of specific accomplishments to work toward over a year, month, or quarter.

Each square represents a meaningful win.
Each win builds momentum.
Each completed row becomes a reason to celebrate.

Not sure “bingo” conveys enough professionalism?

  • Call it Momentum Bingo if your culture invites something fun and energizing.
  • Call it The Progress Grid if your workplace requires more businesslike framing.

Call it what you will. Same concept. Same tool. Same outcomes.

Why is bingo better than traditional goal lists?

Most teams already have goals—some of them likely prescribed by leadership. And whether or not they’re enthused about those goals, most team members do want to succeed.

The problem isn’t ambition. It’s engagement.

Momentum Bingo solves the engagement problem by:

  • Making progress visible
  • Breaking big goals into concrete actions
  • Encouraging shared ownership, not top-down pressure
  • Celebrating movement, not just massive milestones

With a simple gameboard, you can create forward motion without adding another heavy framework. And you’ll make work feel more human … and humane.

Setting up Momentum Bingo is easy.

1. Choose a timeframe

Momentum Bingo works best with clear boundaries:

  • Quarterly or monthly for fast-moving teams and projects
  • Annual for a focus on sustainable growth

Long-term grids reduce pressure. Shorter-term grids increase energy. Choose accordingly.

2. Build the grid

Create a 5×5 grid (25 squares), including a free center space. Make sure to populate each square with a goal that is:

  • Specific
  • Achievable
  • Within the team’s control
  • Complete-able (you’ll know for sure when you can mark it as “done”)

Instead of the vague:
Increase sales

Be more specific:
Hit our monthly revenue goal

3. Balance the types of wins

A strong grid includes a mix of:

  • Business growth (more customers, new products)
  • Team and culture (new onboarding program, cross-training to back up every role)
  • Skill development (training complete, adoption of new tool)
  • Customer experience (5-star customer review, re-engagement of a former client)
  • Leadership and wellbeing (use of vacation days, no-travel November)

Beyond just output, involve your team in reaching milestones that will lead to sustainable success.

4. Choose how to celebrate

Don’t skip this part. Celebrating those wins is what builds momentum.

You might decide that:

  • Individual squares = cup of coffee or quick shout-out
  • One completed row = team lunch or small perk
  • Multiple rows = bigger celebration or shared reward
  • Crush the whole card = after-hours event or public recognition

The point isn’t the prize. It’s pausing to appreciate the team’s progress.

Here’s Momentum Bingo for a small, independent bookstore.

I floated this concept past my team at Anthology for Books, and they responded with, “I love this idea!” and “Such a fun way to reach our goals!” So, when we meet this week for a year-end inventory count and strategy session, we’ll put the finishing touches on our own Momentum Bingo card for 2026. Here’s our working draft:

In our case, anyone can win a square, unless it’s specifically assigned. Most of our squares require team effort, but some are individual. All count toward our shared success. One team, one grid.

Let the game begin!

As a team leader or business owner, you don’t need another rigid framework or jargon-heavy procedure to move your team forward.

What you need is a practical, visible way to reinforce a few powerful truths:

  • Progress beats perfection.
  • Small wins accumulate, like compounding interest.
  • Success is better when shared.
  • Aspiration is only as good as your follow-through.

So, as you face down your team’s challenges in 2026, give your people the benefit of clear intentions, visible progress, and permission to celebrate along the way. Whether you call it Momentum Bingo or The Progress Grid, you and your team will enjoy creating and crushing goals that actually move your business forward—one square at a time.
